As loved ones age, their vocal cords tend to lose their elasticity and they may begin to experience problems with speech and language. A weakening of the muscles of the larynx may cause a senior’s voice to quiet or tremor. Their speech even has the tendency to slow in speed.
Many times, this behavior is incorrectly attributed to a senior’s decreased comprehension and understanding of language. Geriatric speech therapy focuses on improving the pronunciation and articulation of words through sessions with an experienced speech therapist.
Residents will be given speech exercises to practice. Optimally, the practice when combined with the speech therapy sessions will help seniors communicate more effectively with their friends and family.
