Helmwood Healthcare, who has been part of this annual barbeque event since 2008, will be one of three facilities who will host members of the Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) this summer.  The men of Elizabethtown First Presbyterian Church and Wink’s Smokehouse personnel (a local member of KCBS) will set up their cooking equipment at Helmwood on Friday morning to prepare enough food to feed residents and their families,staff and their families, and volunteers.

The merry revelry of Mardi Gras was evident in the festivities that were planned by the activity department at Helmwood Healthcare.

Residents enjoyed a creatively adorned King’s Cake, a ring of twisted bread topped with purple, green, and yellow icing and sugar.

They then decorated masks of their own and masqueraded throughout the facility in their creations.

Residents of Helmwood Healthcare dressed in all shades of red and pink to attend the annual Sweetheart Dance and

party that was held Saturday, February 13. Members of a local Girl Scout troop assisted with the event. 

Cookies, cheese and crackers, and punch were served and residents had their photographs taken

beneath a Valentine-decorated arbor. 

Wheelchairs were not a hindrance as many enjoyed dancing to the music.

To thank the dietary staff for all the delicious meals they prepare, the residents of Helmwood Healthcare

treated them to homemade chocolate pies.  Residents baked the crusts, stirred up the filling and

covered the dessert with whipped cream………all sugar-free, so everyone could have a big piece!

Love was in the air at Presbyterian Homes of Louisville on February 11, 2010, as we celebrated Valentine’s Day at our annual dance.  A live band provided entertainment as residents and guests enjoyed red slushies and cookies……and, of course, dancing was a “must”.  A king and queen were crowned and door prizes were given.  The dance was a great success, thanks to the efforts of many, and was a wonderful reminder that love is always in the air in our community.

Presbyterian Homes of Louisville held a Grand Opening Celebration for the wonderful new Resident Wellness Center on February 3, 2010!  The Center is provided by the gracious support of PeopleFirst Rehab and Presbyterian Homes and Services of Kentucky with the hope of expanding healthy opportunities for the older adults we serve.  All of the Assisted Living and Personal Care residents are encouraged to use the center (with physician approval) under the supervision of our new Center Coordinator, Howard Levine.  The Center includes a recumbent bike, treadmill, versatile exercise/weight station, free weights, resistance bands and more and    is surrounded by beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows - - light and possibilities abound!

Rev. Peggy French opened the celebration by offering a blessing and prayer of thanks, followed by words of appreciation to the many that supported the opening of our Center.  Melinda Galloway, Therapy Director, spoke about the importance of each of the six areas of holistic health and Howard Levine shared his hopes in encouraging each person with her/his personal goals for healthy growth.  Kristy Hubert helped folks to interact by involving them in a fun quiz and giving prizes!
There was standing room only as tours of the Center were provided.
